Ibaragi Part 2 茨城（その２）

October 24-26 found Hatsumi and I in Tokyo and Ibaragi. After visiting the Tokyo temple, we headed up to Ibaragi to visit Hatsumi's family. Another very important event that happened that weekend is that we finally became officially engaged!10月24日-26日、初美と私が東京と茨城に行ってきました。東京神殿に入ってきてから、初美の家族に訪問するために、茨城に行きました。その週末に最も大切な出来事は、初美と私が婚約しました！

We visited the Fukuroda waterfall with Hatsumi's Uncle and Aunt.　初美の叔父さんと叔母さんと一緒に袋田の滝を見に行きました。

We went out for lunch where we ate hand made soba or buckwheat noodles.　外食して、手作りの蕎麦を食べてきました。

Next stop was this amazing long and high bridge.　次はこの橋を渡ってきました。本当に高くて、長くて。。。

There were several places where you could look down into the canyon.　下が見えるところはいくつかありました。

Sunday brought a special treat. We discovered that Hatsumi's Aunt has actually been learning the wiles of the harmonica :) for the past 3 years. Her group performed and we went to listen.　初美の叔母さんがハーモニカを3年間習ってきて、日曜日に演奏会がありました。聞きに行って来ました。

Hatsumi and I were the youngest in the crowd by at least 30 years probably. All the folks around us would all of sudden start singing along with the music. Apparently they played a bunch of old songs they all learned in primary school.　初美と私がそこで一番分かったです。時々、聞いている人たちが歌いだしました。皆が小学生の時に習った歌みたい。

On the way home, Hatsumi and I dropped by Tokyo again to have dinner with the Stevenson's, report our engagement, and to learn a little about what life as a General Authority is like.　帰る途中に、スティーベンソン家と一緒に食事しました。婚約について報告して、中央幹部の生活について学びました。

Kofu 甲府

A few weeks ago Hatsumi and I visited the Kofu Ward in Yamanashi-ken. My great great uncle Elder William Reuben Fairbourn started missionary work in that area with his companion 101 years ago in 1907. Along with meeting some of the members of the ward, I also met one of my Japanese students from the MTC, and received a copy of the Kofu Ward 100 years anniversary pamplet. 数週間前、初美と一緒に山梨県に行って、甲府ワードに訪問してきました。101年前（1907年）私の曾曾叔父さんが同僚と一緒にこのエリアの伝道を始めました。たくさんの教会員に会って、独りのMTCからの教え子に会ったり、甲府ワードの100周年を祝うためのパンフレットを貰ったりしてました

We dropped Mieko chan off at her place before heading back. She works at a travel lodge right behind Mt. Fuji. It was just stunning!　帰る前、美枝子ちゃんをアパートまで乗せてあげました。富士山の近くにある旅館で働いています。本当にすごかったです！

This place reminded me of a Anne of Green Gables--just a secluded place seemingly untouched by the rest of the world. Just amazing!　周りを見て、赤毛のアンを思い出しました。あまり世に触られていないような雰囲気でした。

The Famous Tim Tam Slam ザ・有名なチム・タム・スラーム！

I know you`ve all been waiting for this one! This is complete explanation and demonstration of how to enjoy a perfect Tim Tam Slam!
皆様はこのポストをとても楽しみにしていましたよね。チム･タム・スラム説明とデモンストレーション！
1. Heat up hot chocolate.　ホットココアを温める。

2. Bite of two corners of Tim Tam (Australian cookie treat) (opposite corners-note the smaller the bite the better-more deliciousness later)　チム･タム（オーストラリアのクッキー）の反対の角を噛み取る。
3 . Put one bitten off corner in your mouth and dip other in hot chocolate.　一つの噛み取られた角を自分の口に入れて、もう一つをホットココアに入れる。
4. Begin sucking as much hot chocolate into the cookie as you possibly can.　できるだけたくさんのホットココアをクッキーの中に吸う。

5. Just as the cookie is about to melt out of your hand...slurp it all up! Melted chocolate cookie deliciousness!!!!!!　クッキーが溶けて落ちそうになったら、クッキーを全部口に吸っちゃいます！溶けたチョコレート美味しさ！！！

6. Repeat steps 2-5 until all 11 Tim Tams that come in each package are gone (you may need to make more hot chocolate part of the way through).　各パッケージに入っている11個のクッキーがなくなるまで、2番目から5番目までの段階を繰り返す（途中でもっとホットココアを作る必要があるだろう）。
7. Drink the remaining hot chocolate (note-you may discover some Tim Tam parts which fell into the chocolate!)　残りのホットココアを飲む（チム･タムが入っているかもしれません！）
8. Done!　　御仕舞い！

That`s right folks. Just absolutely amazing indescribable deliciousness!!!!　その通り皆さん！筆舌に尽くし難い美味しさ！
Here`s my first attempt for a movie! Demonstration of the Tim Tam Slam. (Note the excellent spoon usage in order to maximize meltage of Tim Tam and ensure a safe landing of said melted Tim Tam in mouth not in hot chocolate.)　初めてビデオを付けてみました。チム･タム･スラムのデモンストレーション。（スプーンを使うことによって、最終的にチム・タムがもっと口（カップでなく）に入らせることができます）

Ise 伊勢

A couple of Friday`s ago I went with Iwane san to Ise. 岩根さんと一緒に伊勢に行ってきました。

This is off the bridge on the way to Ise Jingu--one of the most famous Shinto Shrines in Japan. It was believed that Emporer could see the sun rising from Ise and so built this shrine for the God of all Gods-the Sun God Amaterasu.　伊勢神宮にある橋から見ているところ。天皇が京都に住んでいた時に、この辺から日の出を見えると言われています。したがって、この神社を作りました。Nice looking trees on the way. 　通り道端の木。
This is where you purify your hands before walking further. 進む前に、ここで手を洗って清めます。

Apparently companies and individuals come to the Shrine annually to given a gift of some kind to to the God`s in order to entreat their favor for the new year. This company is bringing freshly harvested rice for their offering. 新年のためにいろんな人や会社が伊勢神宮にやってきて、神様の恵みを求めるために、ささげ物を持って来るそうです。この会社は新しく刈り取ったお米を持って来ました。
Ise Jingu is rebuilt every 20 years switching off between two different sites. This fenced off area is will be where it is rebuilt next in about 5 years. 伊勢神宮は２０年ごとに二つの場所の交代で建て直されています。5年後に、この柵の裏に建て直されます。
Looking up the stairs to the currently built shrine, built about 15 years ago. 神社を向いている階段。15年ぐらい前に、この神社の立て物が建てられました。
A Shinto priest leads the members of the company mentioned above inside the outer wall of the Shrine. 神社のエリアの中まで、ある神官が先の会社の人を案内しています。

Worshipers paying their reverence. In order to do so you step up, toss some money, bow twice, clap twice and then bow one final time. 礼拝している信者。礼拝するには、上がって、お金を投げ、2回礼、2回拍手、1回礼。 So...embarrassing story. Mr. Iwane and I were walking away from the Shrine and few people pass by--one wearing a kimono. Once Mr. Iwane spotted this he immediate run over and explained that this foreigner (me) really wanted to take a picture with someone wearing a kimono. I don`t quite remember ever saying that...but I got a picture out of it :). 恥ずかしい話なのですが。岩根と一緒に歩いたところで、着物を来ている人を通りました。岩根さんが急いで、彼女のところに行ってきました。「この外人が着物を着ている人と一緒に撮りとがっている」と言っていたのです。そう言う覚えはないのですが。。。マ、写真が貰えた！：）

Chicken! Mr. Iwane suggested KFC for lunch... チキン！岩根さんがお昼のためにケンタッキーフライドチキンを提案しました。
As we were leaving the grounds Mr. Iwane insisted that he borrow my camera for a picture. He then squatted down a little and proceeded to take my picture. I had no idea of what he doing. This is the result. Nice tree. 　神宮を出たところで、岩根さんが突然にカメラを頼んで、写真を撮りました。何をしているかわかりませんでした。これは結果です。素敵な気だね。。。
Okage Yokocho. This is an alley right next to the temple grounds lined with shops and restaurants for visitors. お陰横丁。伊勢神宮の隣にあって、客さんのためにたくさんの店とレストランが並んでいます。
Lunch! A little sashimi, a chestnuts and a few other things which I have no idea what they are called... :) 　お昼。刺身、クリ、そして名前が知らない他の食べ物。。。

Looking into the entrance to the temple grounds again on the way back to the car. 　車の帰り途中撮った神宮の入り口の写真 We had some extra time so we took a drive up a mountain to a view point near the Pacific Ocean.　もう少し時間があったので、太平洋の近くにある山を車で上って、展望台から見た風景。

From here you can see Mt. Fuji on a clear day. In the summer, apparently the sun rises just on the side of Mt. Fuji. What a sight that must be! 晴天の時、ここから富士山が見えるそうです。夏の時に、太陽は富士山の横に上るそうです。綺麗でそうでしょう。

Indian Nepaleon Curry Part 3! インドネパールカレー（その３）

Yes, if you are counting you will realize that this is our third time to go to our Indian Nepaleon Curry resturaunt. This time we went with our friends from the Gifu Ward the Barnes Family! もし数えているなら、これは3回目！今回は岐阜ワードの友達（バーンズ家）と一緒に行ってきました。

I thought about leaving this picture captionless, but I'll confess this isn't our baby. This is Lily chan, the Barnes' daughter. Isn't she cute?　この写真について説明しないでおいて、皆の想像力を働かせようと思いましたが。。。私の赤ちゃん。。。ではありません！バーンズ家のリリちゃんです。河合でしょう！ Jerome and Yumi　ジェーロムとユミ One more picture with Lily chan.
