Big Trip! 旅行！

It is finally here! I took 10 days and went around Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Himeji and Hiroshima. What a blast! やっとアップしました！10日間の間に、京都、大阪、奈良、姫路と広島に行ってきました！すごく楽しかった！

This is called the `Daimonji`. Shinto priests make little fires out of a bunch of prayers written on sticks of woods. Put them all together and this is what you get on the side of a mountain in Kyoto. This is `dai` or the character for big`.　これは大文字と言って、神道の神官さんが祈りが着いている枝で焚き火を作ってきて、全部に日を着けたら、こうなります！「大」です。

Toji. The tallest pagoda in all of Japan. 　東寺。日本には一番高い塔だそうです。 Turtles for Christopher. Expand the pictures and you`ll notice that they look like honeydoo, Foof! クリストファーのために撮ったカメの写真。フーフよ、ハニデゥーと似ているじゃない？
The Tamaya`s. Brother Tamaya is the Stake President in Kyoto. Himeka chan is their grand daughter. I stayed at their place for 2 nights. 玉屋家。玉屋兄弟は京都ステークのステーク会長です。ひめかちゃんは孫です。2泊しました。
Traveling around Uji. Koufukuji Temple. 宇治での旅行。興福寺。

This is at Ujigami Jinja (Shrine). The piles of sand I think are for an offering to the Gods.　宇治上神社。積まれた綱は神へのささげ物だと思います。

If you look carefully you can find a soft-shelled turtle called `suppon`. It has a really long neck which can be extended and retracted. Apparently a Japanese delicacy as well. よく見たらスッポンは見えます。とても長い動ける首があります。日本で食べられるみたいです。
Byodoin. This was created to represented Buddha`s Western Paradise. 平等院。仏の極楽の象徴として立てられました。
A replica is found on the Japanese 10 yen peice. A comparision was made. 　10円玉に平等院が付いています。比較しているところ。
Inside we find a great gold statue of Buddha 　中には仏像があります。

Kinkakuji temple. Probably one of the most famous sightseeing place in Japan. 金閣寺。多分日本では一番人気のある観光地です。
This is Ryoanji. A very famous Japanese rock garden.　竜安寺。とても有名な枯山水です。

This litte garden reminded me of Narnia. Can you think of what part? 僕がこの小さな公園を見て、ナルニア物語について思い出しました。なぜか分かりますか。

A sad day. This is the Domino`s Pizza that would sell 5 dollar medium pizzas when I was a missonary (you could choose between 3 different kinds). I asked and they no longer have that deal... とても寂しい経験。伝道中に何回か行っていた、500円のMサイズのピザ（三つの種類から選べる）を売っていたドミノズピザ屋さん。もう売っていないと言われました。

This tree is called a `Sarusuberi` or a `Monkey Slipping` tree in Japanese 　日本語で「さるすべり」という木です。

It is very popular to drink the water at Kiyomizu Temple (literally `pure water` temple). I guess the different fountains are for love or success, etc. 清水寺で流れている水を飲むのが人気です。それぞれの滝は恋や成功などのためだそうです。
These ladys are called Maiko san 　舞妓さんたち。
After Kyoto, Chris and I headed towards Osaka. This is the moat around Osaka castle.　京都の後で、クリス君と大阪に行きました。大阪を囲む外堀。
Chris and I found this huge rock in the wall of the castle. クリスと僕がこんなにでかい岩を見つけました。
Osaka Castle　大阪城 So we were coming around the side of the castle and saw this sign which we thought may be something important about the castle. When we went over to read it it read `Concerning the instalation of the elevator`... 　大阪城を回って、この看板を見つけました。大切な情報が載っているかなと思ってやってきたのですが、 「エレベーターの設置について」が乗っていました。。。

So I wanted to take this cool picture of an Octopus that had come my way. The octopus wasn`t the only thing that came my way...in my way... :) 　 やっとタコがやってきていい写真を撮りたかったのですが、子供たちもやってきました！

More lanterns! There are about 3000 standing and hanging lanterns at this Shrine. At a festival they light them all! 　灯篭！この神社には3000個くらいあるそうです。ある祭りで全部灯すそうです。

So we followed her right in and guess what...bought souviers. I think she has it all planned out with the shopkeepers and we played into her wiles! Apparently she visits the store everyday. 僕らは付いて行って、おみやげを買ってしまいました！桜ちゃんは多分店員と作戦を作ったじゃないかなと思います。負けたね、僕ら！毎日桜ちゃんが訪問するみたいです。

Todaiji-the largest wood structure in the world and home of the Great Buddha of Nara. 東大寺-世界には一番大きい木材でできた建物で、大仏があるところです。

And here`s the great Buddha. It is about 15 meters tall　大仏です。高さは１５メートルくらいみたいです。

We met up with Hatsumi in Nara Park and started our drive to Hiroshima. We made a brief stop at this amazing castle in Himeji. 　奈良公園で初美と会って、広島に向かって運転し始めました。途中で姫路城に行ってきました。

We made it to Hiroshima. The first full day in Hiroshima, Hatsumi`s aunt took us around to a couple of places. First stop in the mountains where we walked around and chatted with some new friends. 　広島に着きました。最初の日、初美の叔母さんはクリスと僕をあちこちに連れて行ってくれました。最初に山の方に行って、新しい友達と喋りながらグルッと歩き回りました。

We talked about avoiding mumushi (a venomous snake) which we didn`t meet except inside a bottle, but we did see this one on the way. 　ずっとマムシの話をしました。でもボトルに入っているのしか見ませんでした。これは通り道にいて普通の蛇。

I was crossing the street and randomly met Elder Duree who I had taught in the MTC. He was touring a bit with his parents before he went home from his mission. 道を渡るところで教え子のデゥレー長老にたまたまに会いました。伝道を終わって、買える前に両親と旅行しているところでした。

We then visited the Peace Memorial Museum. This is a watched which stopped at the dropping of the bomb. 　平和記念博物館。原爆弾が落ちた時に止まってしまった腕時計。
These are all letters of protests from the Hiroshima Mayor whenever there have been any nuclear testing. 　原子の検査が行われるごとに、広島の市長が抗議を送るそうです。

After the peace park we went out for Okonomiyaki with Hatsumi`s Grandmother (left back), Aunt (right back) and Great Aunt (right front). Do you see the Okonomiyaki? Yep, none here. That`s because after we ate okonomiyaki, Hatsumi`s Great Aunt didn`t think we were full enough so we went out for sashimi as well!　平和公園の後で、初美のお婆さん（初美の隣）と叔母さん（クリスの右）と大叔母さん（クリスの左）と一緒にお好み焼きを食べに行ってきました。お好み焼きが見えますか。ないでしょう。お好み焼きは足りないと大叔母さんが思ったので、さしみをも食べるために大叔母さんがそこにも連れて行ってくれました。 Squid! They were still moving! イカ！まだ動いたんですよ！
The next day Hatsumi, Chris and I headed across the river on a ferry to visit Miyajima. その次の日に初美とクリスと僕は、フェリーに乗ってある川を渡って、宮島に訪問しました。

Chris had just bought this hat and we passed by these statues and we just had to take a picture.　クリスは帽子を買ってきて、この像を通っていた時に写真が撮りたくなりました。

Itsukushima Shrine`s famous Torii Gate in the water. At different times of the day the tide actually pulls all the way out so you can actually walk out to the gate. 　厳島神社の近くにある鳥居です。干潮で鳥居まで歩いて行けるそうです。

We found these really cool looking statues. Could not pass by with out a picture. 　とても素敵な像を見つけました。もちろん写真撮らなきゃ！と思いました。
